Favorite Part/What "Doesn't Work"
I would have to say that my favorite "part" of this collection would have to be, in general, the way that it is written as solid monologues, and that the horror of the situation isn't directly stated, but rather the scenario and setting is given and the reader is allowed to ruminate on and experience the horror in themselves. That, I feel, is the hallmark of excellent horror writing and is part of the reason it still stands up to this day. One thing that doesn't work, however, is the dated nature of the story. Granted, I'm one for maintaining things as they are rather than muddying their originality for the sake of clarity. That being said, some parts of Lovecraft's works were written in a dated and hard-to-understand way that required knowledge of terms and phrases of the times. I wouldn't change it to modern phrasing, but I would include either a translation guide for dated terms or a "Paraphrasement" of each passage in modern English, when applicable.
